*Mush*Letter Writing!

Did you know Jawaharlal Nehru was having a torrid affair with Lady Mountbatten, the wife to the last Viceroy of British India...and Lord Mountbatten had full knowledge of it?

And also that over a period of many years, Nehru wrote a letter everyday to his lady...a suitcase filled with which was discovered eventually from her possessions!

A letter EVERY day!
My god, that is HUGE!

Imagine the sense of the feeling of holding a sheet of paper in the hand with scribbles of someone you love, the handwriting baring a familiarity and also perhaps a not-so-moist now imprint of lips that would have touched it before sealing it in the envelope...

Mails then don’t just remain sheets of papers and envelops!
Mails then contain a beating heart! The feelings and emotions of those sending it as well as those waiting with bated breath to receive it!

How I miss receiving letters delivered by the postman*other than receipts, e-notifications n reminders now*!
Thankfully, my generation still has an inkling of how it felt.

While I was growing up, I was extremely fond of purchasing cards and sending them to people, even those whom I only remotely knew, on their birthdays and anniversaries and even on New Year’s, etc.
I would write long mails to my cousins and friends who parted ways after leaving school and went to hostels.
*Sadly those tendencies still continue...I can’t write ANYTHING short!*
I still have a stack full of mails from those times, neatly and chronologically piled! When I read them...there’s a great sense of nostalgia!

I guess my writing skills were honed from the fact that I regularly would pour out all that was happening with me in these mails!
The anticipation of checking the mail box every day also reminds me of the foolish game of watching those little black birds, teeming in the surroundings and us chanting:
1 for sorrow
2 for joy
3 for letter
4 for toy/boy*depending upon the age I guess*
5 for silver
6 for gold
7 for a secret never to be told!
And you were supposed to give flying kisses to these birds while counting them to make the rule come true! Although all of us pined to spot the adventure-dipped 7...sighting any number except 1*which was mercilessly cursed*, was enough to satiate the simple hearts!

Needless to say, when I would espy 3 birds, my urge to reach home from school would become more intense, as I would be kissing weirdly through the bus window at them*thankfully the pouts were never misconstrued by those who watched this ritual being performed by every other girl moving past in school buses*

*Psst...Let me also share here how we screwed up this poor rhyme one notorious day:
1 for a hug
2 for a kiss
3 for a boyfriend, never to be missed!
4 for a love bite
5 for a sad fight
6 for flirting with few
7 for smooches just for you!
Oh yeah...we were a completely focussed bunch of teenagers!*

Coming back,
Yes, letter writing was an art...
The frustration when you would write one word wrong, spoiling the beautiful alignment of all the others...often motivated me to crumble the entire sheet into the bin and begin all over again!
The keenness of viewing your name on the envelope and following it with the guess game of who could it be from!
Writing neatly and painstakingly every word, for the reader to feel you, while he read what you wrote!
And if the envelope was scented or heavier than usual...the lub-dub of the heart beat reaching the levels of Mt. Everest!

Being impressed by the handwriting, the lucid flow, a cartoon here and there, a smiley face, the signature...it all bore immense significance, which perhaps the generations after us would not be able to experience!
You may have computer memory full of chats saved...but no paper that you just randomly pick up from the shelf and hold it close to feel how your beloved would have held that very sheet before sending it to you! And moving your fingers over the very words!
Yes, letter writing was a symbol of much romantic concoction!

I recently overheard of a letter written by the famous Romantic poet John Keats, in a movie called Bright Star! He had fallen head over heels in love with a lady called Fanny Brown, inspiring many of his immortal poetic creations! However their togetherness was short lived as Keats died an unfortunate death, succumbing to illness and in the belief that he was a failure.
The world now marvels, reads, quote his creations to soothe the burning hearts of lovers! I have jotted down here whatever I remembered of it with a few additions of my own...for love always gets me carried away!

Dear Love,
The day today is very fine...
I would have had the pleasure of enjoying it, if the remembrance of you had not weighed upon me...

Ask yourself my love,
Was it not so cruel of you to enchant me so?
To destroy my freedom?

I don’t know how to express my emotions to so fair a woman...
Find a brighter word than bright...
A fairer word than fair!

I almost wish we were butterflies...
To live but three days!
And three such wonderful days with you,
I could feel much delight than fifty common years could ever give me!

And as I write, I kiss the softest words that mark the paper here...
You kiss them too...
So I get the feeling that your lips have been where mine were...
John

Inspired by Keats...here’s a little attempt of my own*wish there was somebody to send this to also...sigh!*

Dear beloved,
It is a cruel conspiracy of eternal forces to have brought us together, made us realize how deep and fulfilling love can be and yet keep us apart!

To make us feel what true and doubt-free feelings are!
Emote the fierce emotions, we never thought existed!
Express the words, which erupt effortlessly from the unknown cores of our desires!

Had I not known you...I would have carried on in the hum drums of life believing love to be a fabrication of good writers and an outcome of pregnant imagination!
I would have continued to think of the heart as just an organ!
I would have enjoyed moments of solitude, riches of books, reaped the joys of friendships, and gloated in the pride of ornaments...all of which hold no significance or lustre now!
For now I have not a moment that is mine alone...without you!
Moments become experiences when they are marked by your presence in my thoughts and miracles when you are actually there!

It is ironic that I desire to merge into you to understand my true identity and purpose of coming into this world!
It is unfortunate that we can visualise each other all day, but the moment we reach out a hand to touch what seems so real...you are just not there!

I pine for you, but painful how so ever it is...it is also comforting!
I burn in desire and do so willingly, to re-emerge from the ashes!

I look forward to being alone not to think about you...for I do that all the while...but so that I can smile thinking about you!

Love you more than me and more than you,
Breathing till I see you again and thereafter start to live,
Yours only!

i dig people who write or can express themselves...

Hi Vb...
I have received all sorts of letters*even letters from film stars for I used to write to almost all of them worth their mettle;-)*

I dig writers too...
But they are dug up so deep, that I always keep digging;-)

Hope your secret wish comes true:-)

Oh yes, the saved chat or email is nothing compared to the letter or even note. I am so sentimental I have letters saved going back to when I was 13 (the boy who sent those to me is now my facebook friend and dates only boys...no wonder he was so sweet a boyfriend :D).

And wooow so romantic that he wrote letters every day. And that it continued so long. I know I am biased but to me that is real romance (even as a kid I found the idea of impossible love the most romantic).

The other thing with the old style letter is that you had to wait...not the instant gratification of today. Plus of course they showed so much of the sender than just the words - the choice of paper, the handwriting, the seal (even if just words or sticker), any extras sent like photos...ahh I want to send a letter right now!

Cool. So start writing to me now.

Uh Hi Wicked.

Suruchi said...

Hi W3...
So truly said...
Not just by the content of the letter but through so many more factors could would express himself when he WROTE a letter!

Awwww...for that 13 year old boyfriend..
I guess he would be making some boy somewhere very happy:-)

And when you say "Impossible love is the most romantic"...it is a beautiful line in itself:-)

Please send that letter...and send one to me too:-)

Su, Darling...lets become pen pals... I love writing and receiving letters. And guess what I have actually written and received love letters too..!!! * yeah from Shayon :P*

There was a time when we both were so short on money and hope of getting any, that we resorted to Love Letters in snail mail.. and well, till date as a ritual... I write to him.. on paper.. maybe not as often, as during that phase, but I do write.
Ask him, he has a bunch of really weird letters... from daily boring stuff to totally romantic letters... from discussing colours to discussing finances.. yeah I have much less of the collection.. thanks to him being super Lazy...

The longest one I ever wrote for him was of 23 A4 sheets... the letter took about a week... and it was huge. * Shayon slept too while reading :( *

But, it is just such a tangible feeling to hold a piece of paper sent by the one you love... I wish he would write to me.. especially because he has such beautiful handwriting.

I also have a bunch of cards and letters from other friends and relatives.. and I have cried reading them so often..

Lovely letter yourself girl.. you rock..

(PS: My parents used to write to each other too when dating.. and my mum use to use a boy name.. :P)

Hi Tbg...
You ARE wicked!:-)

So ‘starting’ now with this!
Make it longer than what I am giving you here and I promise to bounce back in doubles*no puns intended anywhere...Actually this should be a mandatory or by default tagline in all our exchanges, for with you, one never knows:-)*

Suruchi said...

Hello Sakshi sweetheart,
I am your ‘darling’ and you are my ‘sweetheart’...this in itself is a good start to mush writing...
Now if only one of us were of a different gender...sigh! Lolzzzzzzz!

Wow you guys...I am kinda jealous now and soooooooooo curious to see Shayon’s pile*Shayon...hint, hint;-)*
And stop being lazy Shoy*I am sticking to this name...I love it*
This awesome gurl deserves all the outpourings of your heart that you can possibly give :-)

I mean a 23 PAGE LETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shoy, you must have donated pearls...naah...diamonds in previous birth to get her...and Sakshi, he didn’t sleep over it, baby...he went into a dream or fantasy land post it...thinking of you only...hain na, Shoy?:-)

And he has a beautiful handwriting too...ahem, ahem!
*all my curious antennas shaking with hyper need for revelations*

P.S. I caught some of my parents letters written to each other too...during courtship...during the times she would return to my nani’s house post their wedding...I knew then where my mush genes come from!

Suruchi said...

Hi Ria,
Wow...you all have received love letters, except me:-(
Boo hoo...
Do you guys think it is too late to begin now? Hehe...

Yes damn e-mail!
I miss letters dearly...yes, especially those ones which I never received!:-)

8 pages...good going!
But Sakshi has set a ‘Tumbling thoughts’ Record of sorts with 23 pages!
Entries invited to give her competition!

Suruchi said...

Hi Rishi...
My dear, dear Tech Guru...
You write letters still!
Wow...I never expected that from you...and I am so pleasantly surprised!

At the end of the day content is supreme otherwise the sheets would be merely reflections of calligraphy!

Yes my links are ghastly blue for I do/did write on Microsoft Word and then copy paste*I am kinda kanjoos and save on my internet bill by working offline so that my husband does not get too outraged seeing the net bill...plus I also write in bits and parts often...juggling between my bharatiya naari issues...it’s tough being a woman, I tell you;-)*

Message also sent...
Kindly rescue the helpless and get laakhon aashirwaad!:-)

Suruchi said...

Jack...
It’s not every day that one gets a worldly wise man like you spellbound...so I would remain dumbstruck myself and just say thanks for being super nice and duper kind with me*I know I said SO MUCH after saying I would shut up...but that’s me...with an irreparable system’s defect:-)*

Would try my best to keep you enthralled:-)
Thanks again!

I remember how I used to write letters to friends till some 10 years back, with all passion and patience...now even SMS seems little too long..I don't know if my kids would ever write letter..its so extinct..I too like writing letters and of course like being written to..I have a letter written by my one time girlfriend which still is very close to ma heart..

I remember even our english and hindi exams used a have the letter writing section..letters to friend describing about summer vacations, letter to dad asking for a bicycle etc...fun...now I wonder if kids have these things..

Some 10years back while shifting to our new home I came across a packet that contained all the letters that my Mom and Dad wrote to each other after marriage..some 300 letters in all...Mom let me read a few of them...was so very nice to read all that..they still take that out and read to each other sometimes..and a new story comes out every time..Romance is still very much alive trough the old letters..we are probably moving just too fast...letters are becoming a thing of past..

Suruchi said...

Suruchi said...

Hi Anand,
One letter that has been preserved would be so special!
:-)
I guess we all here are pro-letter writing coz we in some degrees are writers...we have the patience to sit down with our thoughts and express them in words...
The art is dying now because many people have lost that!
There’s no time and plus the misconception that expressing too freely makes one a weakling:/

Those letter writing sections in the exams still persist....however kids now write them as a task to get over with and not with the zest of creating something that is an enjoyable read!
I remember writing essays in school n thinking ‘my ma’m would smile at this’
Kids now think ‘ma’m should at least give me a passing grade for this!’

All of our parents do have their cute little piles that binds them together...which we lack!
I just have some 10-12 cards to show:/
Yup you said it right...romance is alive and throbbing in letters...
Wish they don’t become a thing of the past

Suruchi said...

Hi Niraj...
Although email is faster...it is very impersonal!
There may be the best of words blotting the screen, but there’s a lack of warmth somehow...maybe out of the fact that you are staring at a machine while reading the mushiest of words!

I pray too that the world would write more letters!
Learn the anticipation of waiting n not doing things at the click of a button!
And for that if the postal department wants me to be their brand ambassador...I shall surely oblige!;-)

Suruchi said...

Helloooooooo Pavitra...
Awwww....you are such a sweetheart!
It is kinda sad when love does not end in a happily-ever-after...
But then some of the most intense love stories of all times are those which have remained incomplete!

It is difficult to find true, burning love in today’s time...and more difficult and painful to live with the feeling that you have found it and lost or found and cannot acquire it!

Such is life!
You are such a sweet emotional girl to have shed tears at this!
I so pray too you get tons of love letters, dear and not of unrequited or sad tinges but love in all its splendour, cheer and fulfilment!
Amen!:-)

i have this letter with me that someone very special once gave to me...n she had put a paper strip inside it on which she had sprayed this perfume of hers which i totally loved. the paper strip still smells of that perfume and every time i take out that letter, a flood of memories come running back...n none of the tons of sms, chats, mails can do that 2 me.

damn now i gotta take out that letter again tonight!

n i wonder when will anyone write 2 me again! sigh!

'Shoy'? :-o U almost make me feel like being called 'Soy' :-p What's next? If I put on some more weight, are you gonna shift to 'Soya chunks'? But then again, on hindsight, it's a much better name than 'Yony'. I mean, come on, were you seriously in your right mind when you thought up that name?

Well, one's amazing. Here I am making plans of getting married to Cathy *yes, you shall have to ask Cathy for the details ;-)* and Sakshi too is trying hard to woo you. Feels nice to see myself all surrounded by women :-)

By the way, my handwriting's kinda screwed up, in the last couple of years. Say thanks to keyboards, for that. Nah, it's not that i do not like writing. It's just that I get bored after a certain, since I can type faster than I can write. Yeah!

Well, here's a confession. Oh no, chuck it. Not here :-p

By the way, a suggestion. if you do plan to write such huge posts. make it a point to divide it in two parts ;-)

And oh... I had almost forgotten to tell you. Check out my blog. There's yet another award waiting for you ;-)

Suruchi said...

Hi Su,
You n your G are absolutely the cutest...
You remind me of how my G n I were and in bits and parts still are after 10 years of marriage!
The romance has kinda settled now and love has taken its place!
I don’t know if there’s a difference in that...but just came out...just like that!

I put this huge sticker in his cupboard that said “I love you this much” with a bunny stretching his arms really wide n all across the space..
He used to be embarrassed opening his cupboard before his mother!:-)
We have now covered the space slightly with his belts!

However, he ain’t much of a writer and hence I have no stack to gloat about:-(
Though I do preserve 1 sorry note running to about a page that he wrote after one and the only fight we had:-)

Sometimes a written word becomes more meaningful than the spoken one:-)

Suruchi said...

Hiyya Blunts!
oooooooooOOOOOOOOooooooo
Someone’s got a scented letter:-)
*all doey-eyed and lashes fluttering...okay, a devilish n curious glint there too*
But is the girl still around or gone?
You know I have a 1001 questions to ask...
But I know I would get no answers:-(
So would save the questions in memory draft;-)

Okay take out that letter again...but why only TONIGHT? Why not during the day? Hmmmm...;-)

N oh yaar...don’t you worry or sigh...there are plenty of letters in store for you!
Aur kuch nahi hua to ‘Mein hoon na!’
Anyways the long comments I make everywhere in reply to you are as bloody as good as letters;-)
Just whiff the surroundings of your computer for the natural aroma:-)

P.S. Like Buckingfastard says philosophically “It’s a good thing one can’t kill another over the internet!”

Suruchi said...

Hi Shoy,
Shoy is so sexy...how on earth can you compare it to soy?
I mean you could have removed the ‘y’ and made is Sho...
Why remove the ‘h’?;-)

Soya chunks, eh? Lolzzzzzzzzzz
Yony was cute too...but now that you mention me being in the right mind, it suddenly occurs to me that the word has many implications;-)
Oops!

Sha, Yon, Yony, Shoy...ke faraq painda hain..
Naam mein kya rakha hain...tusse waise he great-shreat ho!:-)

N as for all the love triangles n rectangles...
You are marrying Cathy?
But she is already married to Laureen?
Sakshi is wooing me?
But she has already been woed by you?
And you surrounded by women??????????
I see all of us too busy in women only by the above inferences...
When and how do we reach to u? Hehe...
*at the risk of sounding repetitive...IT’S A GOOD THING YOU CAN’T GET KILLED OVER THE INTERNET...thank you Bucking for this super mantra*

Everyone types faster than they write!
That’s no excuse lazy bones!
And hey you can’t say ‘here’s a confession’ and not make it!
That’s the worst of sins one human can commit to another!
So confess*psst...maybe in the facebook inbox...wow...where would the world be without my brain wave?:-)*

By the way...I never plan to write huge posts...
It’s difficult to make me stop once I get started*like here*
Besides I feel, if the reader is taking out time to come here on my page...I might as well give him his money’s worth of time pass...n hence the length:-)

And thank you sooooooooooooo much for the award...
Yiyee yiyee yiyeee...
I am glad to be in the circle of friends and hope to be here forever!
I am loving it...tarrapapapara!

You made me remember some more of his beautiful lines...
Like...
A thing of beauty is a joy forever...its loveliness increases...it shall never pass into nothingness*don’t remember the exact quote..but was something to that effect*
Or even La Belle Dame sans mercy!

N not giving the dead man competition yaar...he’d rotate in his grave of he’d see the kind of writings I do;-)

Hi Suruchi!

It's good to be back and reading your tumbling thoughts into the world again!

I can't help but think how the next generation shall never quite get the concept of handwritten letters, pen pals, autograph books and season gretting cards...makes me nostalgic. Remember how the Archies cards used to be sooo huge back in the day? I'd spend hours searching the right one for my friends on their b'day....sigh, This post's making me nostalgic now.

I haven't written many letters myself except passing chits in class and the 10 point 'write a letter' section in exams but oh wait! I've always wished I could communicate more through letters. Beautifully compiled post, as always! :)

My gawd!
N I thought I was the only one who took such mad pains!

One whole year of diary!!!!!!!!
That would be a gift to cherish forever!
You are such a doll!

And thank you for giving me the mind blowing idea of posting something on my husband's office address...that should be worth trying out;-)
